Episode 071 - Zero Proof

Today my friend Tania Tomaszewska and I dive deep into the world of NOLO and “zebra”-ing. And yes, those terms were new to me too!

Our topic is no- and low-alcohol drinks (hence “NOLO”), and Tania and I discuss the increasingly popular choice to reduce alcohol consumption by alternating between drinks with and without alcohol: zebra-ing.

Long-time listeners will know Tania well, starting with our first talk “Wine and Wifi” on Episode 035. Tania and I have since shared a series of very fun SideBar chats, some here on Cheftimony and some on Tania’s show, the excellent TT Wine Explorer Podcast.

In this episode of Cheftimony, I’m sharing Tania’s latest episode in full. You’re about to hear Episode 19: The Rise of NOLO. Tania and I talk about the forces behind the rise in popularity of no- and low-alcohol drinks, we share some of our favourites (and note some areas for improvement!), and we touch on an interesting – and chilling – rise of neo-prohibitionism.

The existential angst felt by many in the wine industry about the threat of neo-prohibitionism was the inspiration for the poem in the introduction to today’s episode, Lines Inscribed Upon a Cup Formed from a Skull or, as I’ve always called it, The Skull Goblet.

As Tania wisely says, ultimately it’s all about balance, choice and human connectivity, whatever might be in your glass! So pour yourself a drink you love, and let’s get to the talk.
