Cheftimony Episode 025 – Hopping Around the Silver State
Today I’m joined by Las Vegas-based attorney Laura Tucker. Beyond her work as a Senior Deputy Attorney General in the State of Nevada, Laura finds time to enjoy the amazing food, wine and craft beer scene in both the south and the north of the Silver State.
Laura and I have a great talk about everything from incredible craft beer in Reno to the diverse and ever-expanding restaurant scene in Fabulous Las Vegas. Like many Vegas locals, Laura doesn’t regularly frequent the main tourist part of Vegas, the famed Strip (which, interestingly, is not in Las Vegas; the Strip is in the unincorporated towns of Winchester and Paradise, Nevada). Wherever the Strip may be, you’re much more likely to find Laura in Downtown Vegas in the Fremont East neighbourhood, one I absolutely love.
On the show today, Laura points out some great Vegas culinary and cocktail spots, from Velveteen Rabbit and The Downtown Cocktail Room in Fremont East to other off-strip favourites including Atomic Liquors, 595 Craft and Kitchen, Mordeo, and Peppermill. Laura and I also reminisce about the now-closed Carnevino Steakhouse in the Venetian Resort (during which I strain my memory trying to recall where former Carnevino Executive Chef Nicole Brisson went to start her own off-Strip restaurant).
Toward the end of our talk, Laura shares thoughts on the similarities between the legal and culinary worlds, on recent travels to Scandinavia, and on her culinary blog Earth2Laura. Laura’s sister Julia, a very talented baker in her own right, is encouraging Laura to start publishing again regularly on her blog, and I second that motion!
Wrapping up today’s show, I look ahead to this weekend’s trip to Las Vegas and to meet-ups with Laura (at Atomic Liquors), Chris Kim of Faces and Aces Las Vegas, Sonja Swanson of The Spicy Eyes Podcast and Bart Cops, the Camper Chef himself! I can’t wait to bring you the full trip report soon.
Right now, though, satisfy your Vegas food cravings by joining me and Laura Tucker for Episode 025 of the Cheftimony Podcast!
