Cheftimony Episode 028 – Bacchus
Today’s episode comes from (or at least very near!) the Bacchus Lounge in Vancouver’s Wedgewood Hotel. That’s where I met recently for a great talk with my friend, fellow lawyer, and fellow food enthusiast, Jeanie Smith.
Before the interview today, I talk briefly about a delicious solo meal I had earlier this week at Burdock & Co., where I’d come to talk to Chef Andrea Carlson about her wonderful new book Burdock & Co: Poetic Recipes Inspired by Ocean, Land, & Air. After that interview (on the podcast next week), I adjourned to the bar seats opposite the open kitchen at Burdock to enjoy a few delicious bites, and I go on about those today too.
To the interview! My guest and I share some work history, having practised at the same private-practice law firm in Vancouver, albeit at different times. As you’ll hear from Jeanie, she now works at the federal Department of Justice in Vancouver. But Jeanie has also worked extensively in the culinary world, starting out at the Atlas Café on Vancouver Island and then moving through larger operations including Milestones and a Joey Restaurant here in Vancouver.
Today, Jeanie shares thoughts on similarities between the legal and culinary worlds and on her fascinating childhood growing up with food-loving parents on Vancouver Island. Jeanie’s mother has published a guide to year-round organic farming, and today we dive into Jeanie’s experiences helping out with that process.
Jeanie also shares thoughts on where to go for a wonderful meal in Whistler, a tiny sushi spot in Vancouver, where to get freshly-shucked scallops, and spots to consider for a vegetarian feast and an incredible bar-seating experience.
So let’s head to the Bacchus Lounge now… Join me for a great talk with my friend, Jeanie Smith.
