Cheftimony Snack: About Those Lawyers

Since Cheftimony is a podcast about food and the stories it allows us to share with each other, it makes sense that I interview chefs. But… what about those lawyers?

“And sometimes lawyers.” It’s the part of the Cheftimony tagline that may need a little explanation. Over the years I’ve been lucky to work as both a lawyer and a chef, so the groups of people I know best are chefs and lawyers. Since Cheftimony is a podcast about food and the stories it allows us to share with each other, it makes sense that I interview chefs. But… what about those lawyers?

In my many years of legal practice, I’ve noticed that lawyers have a whole lot of passions outside the office. These passions could be distance running or classical music or bicycle repair. But for very many lawyers… the passion is food. There is a definite connection between the culinary and the legal worlds, and on Cheftimony, I’m delighted to bring you talks with lawyers who have a passion for food and some great stories to share on the topic.

On today’s snack-sized episode, I’m sharing excerpts from interviews with some of the many lawyers who have appeared on the show. We start with my friend Mark Tweedy, a serious food enthusiast who talks about changes he’s observed in Vancouver’s restaurant scene.

Next, Andrea Rasmussen drops by to talk about the key role food played in her time away from legal practice, a time when she and her husband lived in Turkey and Greece and spent summers in Italy.

My law school classmate and criminal defence lawyer Mark Gervin comments on the importance of community in the culinary world, and you’ll hear our talk from the bar seats at a favourite spot of ours – Burdock & Co. in Vancouver.

Then, we head all the way to Singapore for a quick word with Chef Willin Low who talks about the time he balanced cooking at an Italian restaurant by day with doing legal work for an airline by night!

And finally we return to Vancouver to hear how food can be a language and just how important food is as a counterpart to legal practice, in a talk with my friend and legal colleague Jeanie Smith.

To the snack-sized episode now… “And sometimes lawyers!”
