Cheftimony Episode 053 – Growing Chefs

Both Jennie and Merri are enthusiastic about bringing more indigenous perspectives to the charity’s work.

Growing season is upon us, and today’s episode celebrates growing and cooking food as well as teaching the next generation of farmers and chefs just how to do that. My guests are Merri Schwartz and Jennifer Whately, both leaders of the Vancouver-based charity Growing Chefs.

You’ll hear from Merri – an acclaimed pastry chef and chocolatier – about her start in the culinary industry, her travels through British Columbia, and some of the very impressive initiatives Growing Chefs has underway. For you chocolate lovers, you’ll also hear from Merri toward the end of the episode on just how chocolate is made! Chocolate is a miracle of agriculture and process, and I found it fascinating to hear Merri tell its story. I think you will too. If you are lucky enough to be in or passing through Nelson, BC, make a point of stopping in at Marzano to enjoy some of Merri’s creations.

Like me, Jennie Whately is a food-loving lawyer, and she recently joined the board of Growing Chefs to help drive its work. Jennie and I dive into some culinary travel (we both loved our meals at wd~50) and we speculate about the changes in store at Eleven Madison Park, now that it’s gone vegan. We also muse about just why so many lawyers seem to be food lovers, and Jennie shares her thoughts on the work of Growing Chefs and its future. Both Jennie and Merri are enthusiastic about bringing more indigenous perspectives to the charity’s work.

Join us! The season of growing and Episode 053 are here.
